Hongwanji Mission School (HMS) is excited to celebrate 70 years of educating youth in Hawaii.  HMS is holding its 70th anniversary gala celebration on Saturday, March 9th, 2019, to celebrate its history and provide an opportunity for the many lives touched by this unique school to reconnect.  Past events have included guests from Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, family members of current and former HMS students, faculty and staff of HMS, and supporting organizations and businesses. This event includes a silent auction, sake tasting, and live entertainment!

 

This event, organized through our 5th grade and parent teacher organization (PTO), will raise funds for the HMS traditions program.  This is our signature program where 4th, 5th, and 8th classes travel to places far and wide.  They have real world, first hand experiences visiting historical places and seeing classroom lessons come to life.  The impact on the students' perspective of the world and their maturity is priceless.   The 4th graders’ Big Island Study Tour immerses students in Hawaiian history and lore. The 5th graders trek the East Coast.  They experience Colonial America (Boston and Philadelphia) and visit the heart of our government (Washington D.C. and New York).  The 8th graders visit Japan on an exchange program and immerse themselves in a foreign culture.  The gala this year supports the East Coast Study Tour.
